I remember in fifth grade when the Gideons came to our classroom and gave us all little Bibles. It was cool and really neat. They told how they put Bibles in hotels, hospital rooms, and how they got Bibles in different countries who did not have them. I liked my little Bible – didn’t read it, but I liked it. What harm was there to giving someone a New Testament Bible that has the story of Jesus? You know, love your neighbor, do not murder, don’t strap on bunch of dynamite and go blow yourself and others up, be kind to one another, and the story of how Jesus died on the cross, buried, and resurrected.
Recently a judge ordered a school district in Louisiana to stop the Gideons from giving away Bibles. Check out the story here [Click Here for the Story] about how a single 5th grade girl is shutting down Bible give aways.
When I was on a mission trip to Romania in 1999 [check out my blog on it] we found the value of the Gideons in an amazing way. We went into a region where there were no Christians. We went to different houses sharing the Gospel and found that years before some Gideons had came through and gave out Bibles to everyone in the Romanian language. It was awesome. Many came to salvation just from reading the Bible and understanding what they needed to do to be saved.
That is the real problem with the Bible. The Bible tells us with God’s authority that we are dirty, rotten, filthy sinners and we are condemned to hell because we are sinners. But it also tells us how God sent His only Son to take the punishment for our sins by suffering and dying a horrible death on a cruel Roman cross so we could have forgiveness, heaven, eternal life, and an awesome life here and now. The Bible cuts to the heart of our lives and reveals the truth about us and about God. The problem goes back to the first chapter of the book of John… that men loved darkness more than light.
People love their sin and sin’s way more than they love God. The Bible also reveals that we are made by God and all will give an account before God one day. It doesn’t matter whether they believe in God or not – when they die they will still give an account of their lives and what they did with Jesus.
Yes that is the problem with the Bible – Who does God actually think He is – the Creator? Lord? Maker of the Universe? God Almighty? Why yes… that is actually Who He is.
God says in Isaiah 5:20 says “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;”
